September 2016

Maine Romance Writers is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting romance and other fiction writers via networking and programming. Through monthly meetings and workshops, we strive to provide continuing assistance in the journey to publication, whether by a traditional path, a small press, or independent publishing.

Our next meeting is September 17, 2016

Guest Speaker:

Laima Vince
"The Character in Crisis"

In order for a character to grow in fiction, the character must face, negotiate, and learn from a crisis. Whether that crisis is internally driven or external will determine how the writer must proceed with the writing. This workshop will explore possible crisis scenarios. Participants will be given writing exercises to work on during class time and will present their work in class.

Laima Vince is the recipient of two Fulbright lectureships and a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant in Literature and a PEN Translation Fund grant. She has translated and published two collections of poetry, five works of literary nonfiction, and two plays, in addition to writing numerous essays, articles, stories, poems, and academic papers. She has an accomplished career in education spanning two decades, and is a published writer and playwright with professional literary ties in Europe, Hong Kong, and the United States.

Laima holds a master’s degree in fine arts writing from Columbia University School of the Arts in New York, and in 2014 earned a master’s degree of fine arts in nonfiction from the University of New Hampshire. Laima previously served as the faculty director of the Stonecoast Summer Writer’s Conference, and currently serves as an assistant professor of English at the University of Southern Maine where she teaches creative writing.
