September 2018 Meeting

Maine Romance Writers is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting romance and other fiction writers via networking and programming. Through monthly meetings and workshops, we strive to provide continuing assistance in the journey to publication, whether by a traditional path, a small press, or independent publishing.

Our next meeting is Saturday, September 15th at the USM Campus in Lewiston, Maine

THE ANATOMY OF A NOVEL

Susan Vaughan will discuss the skeleton of a romance novel, the three-act structure and incorporate the four phases of a romance novel from Gwen Hayes’s excellent guide, Romancing the Beat. The presentation will also address the heart of a novel—the characters’ goals, motivation, and conflict. Since it’s unlikely we’ve all read the same novel, she’ll use as her example the 1984 film ROMANCING THE STONE, starring Kathleen Turner & Michael Douglas. Watching it before the presentation is recommended. It’s readily available on DVD and elsewhere. Susan has a DVD she’ll lend.
Susan Vaughan, a multi-published and award-winning author of romantic suspense, former teacher, and West Virginia native, has lived in Maine for many years. Her most recent release is Dark Vision, part of The DARK Files series. Find her at www.susanvaughan.com or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SusanVaughanBooks or on Twitter @SHVaughan.
