According to Gillian Engberg, Editorial Director of Books for
Youth from 2011 to 2014, 71 percent of the 58.1 million American romance
readers opened their first adult romance novel when they were sixteen. In
“Pounding Hearts and Puppy Love,” we’ll take a quick tour of where Young Adult
romance has been, and where it is now. We’ll look at specific examples of sex
and kissing on the page and talk about the use of sex to reveal character and
emotional arc. Finally, we’ll use word lists as a method of creating great sex
and make-out scenes that respect teen readers and their development.
Anna E. Jordan is a
children’s book writer, poet, and illustrator whose Young Adult manuscript Control.
Crush. won the PEN New England Susan P. Bloom children’s book
discovery award. Anna has an MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine
